What to Expect on Your Beginners Tai Chi Course

You are probably be wondering ‘what will be my first class be like? So, here are a few words to help clam your mind, and to help make your experience enjoyable.

What if I don’t know the moves?

Well, if you’re just starting T’ai Chi,you won’t know the moves. You may feel silly, but it is always important to remember that everyone needs to start somewhere. Everyone learns T’ai Chi at their own pace, and there is no compulsion to be at the same level as another in the class. All that is asked is that you pay attention, and do your best, and improvement he will come with time.

What should I do when I get frustrated?

If you have never taken part in a T’ai Chi class before, you will definitely become frustrated at some point. T’ai Chi is challenging to learn. People who do T’ai Chi well, make it look so easy and effortless. But the truth is T’ai Chi is not easy to learn, so don’t expect to be perfect. Your instructor does not expect you to be perfect, and neither should you. The road to fluidity, smoothness and relaxed movements requires a lot of patience and effort. The more you practice, the quicker you will learn and the less frustrated you will become.

How is the class structured?

  1. Gentle warm up exercises
  2. K’ai Men Yoga and Tao Yin
  3. Stance and Postures
  4. Li Style T’ai Chi Short Form
  5. Cool down breathing exercise

T’ai Chi classes involve a lot of repetition, to help you understand the movements. In class, this repetition will be done either with the teacher or without the teacher, as a group or individually.  Practicing without the teacher, sets the pattern for practicing at home.

What is the class etiquette?

On day one, please hand in your completed enrolment form and the full payment for the course. This will save a lot of time and allow us all to start promptly. Heathcare cardholders must bring cards to verify their  suitability.

Please note: There is a 15 minute gap between groups/classes at the Esperance Wellness Centre, so please try to show up to class 5-10 minutes before your class begins.
